Good news for coffee lovers

During the pandemic and lockdown, many cafes have switched to takeaway only, so remember to take your re-usable cup along for your favourite drink and help save the planet at the same time

Takeaway coffees are preserved on the essential shops list during the current pandemic lockdown.

This is great news for coffee and tea lovers, but don’t forget to keep on helping the planet while enjoying your regular caffeine ‘fix’.

We Brits buy an average of four takeaway hot drinks a week, with 20 per cent of people buying at least one a day.

A staggering seven million disposable cups are used every day in the UK, which over a year will produce enough to fill up the Royal Albert Hall!  Many of these cups contain plastic, they are not easily recycled and cannot go into our recycling bins at home. They also create litter causing environmental damage and unsightly streets.

So why not use a re-usable cup?  Cafes and takeaways are now geared up for this and some will give you money off your hot drink if you bring your own re-usable cup.  During the pandemic and lockdown, many food and drink outlets have switched to takeaway only so you can help the environment by planning ahead and taking a re-usable cup along when you visit.

Another advantage is that many re-usable cups are made from materials with insulating properties, meaning they will keep your hot drink hotter for longer. The lids are often a lot sturdier which prevents spillages.

Promoting re-usable coffee cups is the latest in a series of re-use campaigns by the Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham (BDR) Waste Partnership and Renewi, the firm behind the award-winning waste treatment facility at Manvers.

Community Education Liaison Officer, Abi Cox, who is based at Manvers and a keen tea drinker, said people wanted to do the right thing but often just forgot.

She said: “A survey found that more than two thirds of people own a re-usable cup but only one in six remember to take them along when they buy a hot drink. Cafes and takeaways are more than happy to fill them and some even offer a discount to customers with re-usable cups.”

Note to Editors:  The award-winning waste treatment facility at Manvers processes around a quarter of a million tonnes of leftover waste a year from 340,000 homes across Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham, turning it into useful products rather than sending it to landfill.
